THE STORY

The Hanging Gardens. Jardins named their first aperitif after the one garden nobody is sure ever existed, then built it out of bitter orange and rosemary. Alix and Henry wanted something that could stand where an Italian bitter usually stands, at the start of the evening with ice and a slice of orange, without anything having been taken out of it first. It opens on grapefruit and bitter orange, turns herbal with rosemary and basil, and finishes long and properly bitter, with timut pepper sharpening the edge. Silver at the Prix Épicures in 2022. One part over ice, two parts tonic or sparkling water, and you have the Jardins Spritz. One bottle makes around twenty.

WINEMAKING DETAILS

Blended in Touraine, in the Loire Valley, from organic fruits, plants and flowers. Some of the fruit comes from the orchard right behind the production site. The base is orchard apple juice and grape must, layered with an infusion of bitter orange, herbal infusions and lemon juice, then fruit and vegetable concentrates (apple, pumpkin, carrot, blackcurrant) and a touch of carob seed flour for texture. Nothing is dealcoholised: it never contained alcohol. No added sugar, no preservatives. Screw cap.

SERVING NOTE

This is a concentrate, not a pour-and-sip. One part Jardins Suspendus, two parts tonic or sparkling water, plenty of ice, a slice of orange. One 70cl bottle makes around 20 drinks.

Unopened, it keeps at room temperature. Once open, keep it in the fridge and finish it within 4 to 6 weeks. There are no preservatives in it.
