THE STORY

Sauvignon Blanc is Southern Styria's calling card, but Kögl's version comes from vines rooted directly in Kalkmergel — the chalky limestone-marl that gives the region's best whites their electricity. The 2021 vintage scored 92 Falstaff points.

Tamara farms these slopes biodynamically, by hand, because the incline leaves no other choice. What lands in the glass is unmistakably Sauvignon Blanc — gooseberry, passionfruit, that green edge — but with a power and a salty, citrus-driven finish that comes straight from the soil underneath it. It's the wine to hand someone who thinks they've had every Sauvignon Blanc worth trying.

WINEMAKING DETAILS

Hand-picked from Kögl's Demeter-certified biodynamic vineyards on Kalkmergel soil around Ehrenhausen — organic since 2013, biodynamic since 2018. Fermented and matured with minimal intervention, letting the limestone-marl terroir drive the wine's structure: powerful fruit up front, a lively acid backbone, and a distinctly saline, citrus-tinged finish.

SERVING NOTE

Chill for 25 minutes before opening. Already cold? Take it out and wait 5 minutes — this white is best around 10–12°C.

No decanting needed, but give it a few minutes in the glass — the power and saline finish come through best with a little air.
