THE STORY

The orange Veselý is the white counterpart to the red — same vineyard, same philosophy, completely different world. The plot called Veselý (“merry” in Czech) has been farmed by Richard since the 1980s. The white varieties here — Grüner Veltliner, Malvasia, Müller-Thurgau, Neuburger, Pinot Blanc, Traminer, Welschriesling — grow together in the old co-planted way, harvested in a single pass and fermented as one.

The 2021 is a skin-contact wine aged in old oak, earthy and textural, with the kind of savouriness that only old vines on sandy Moravian soil can produce. It is not a simple wine. It opens slowly, rewards patience, and changes significantly in the glass over an evening. Decant it, give it time, and it will keep surprising you.

WINEMAKING DETAILS

The Veselý plot is a small old vineyard that Richard has farmed since the 1980s — 0.3 hectares of co-planted white varieties on sandy, organically certified soils with southwest exposure. Grüner Veltliner, Malvasia, Müller-Thurgau, Neuburger, Pinot Blanc, Traminer and Welschriesling all grow together and are harvested in one pass. The whole bunches ferment with indigenous yeast on the skins, building the amber colour and textural weight that defines this wine. After fermentation, it moves into old oak where it ages until Richard decides it is ready. Zero sulphites added. Unfiltered and unfined.

SERVING NOTE

Chill for 30 minutes before opening. Already cold? Take it out and wait 15 minutes — this orange wine is best around 12°C and needs time to open.

Decanting is worth it here — pour into a decanter or any wide vessel and wait 20–30 minutes. This is a complex, aged wine and it reveals itself gradually.
