THE STORY

Laški rizling is what Slovenia calls Welschriesling, and Bizeljsko is one of the places it feels at home. Here the vines stand in pure marlstone, on hills the Kelhar family has farmed for 240 years.

The grapes come in early September, pressed directly. Then the juice goes into medium toasted 500-litre oak barrels, where it ferments and stays for nine months. A white that spends the better part of a year in wood, and still comes out easy to drink.

Intense on the nose and on the palate, around 12% alcohol. Pour it when you want a white with something to say.

WINEMAKING DETAILS

100% Welschriesling from pure marlstone soils, harvested in the first days of September. The grapes are pressed directly and the juice ferments in medium toasted 500-litre oak barrels. The wine then ages in the same barrels for nine months before bottling. Labelled as a Dry White Wine with RGI (Regional Geographical Indication) Posavje, certified organic, 12.0% alcohol. Keltis has been certified organic since 2009 and Demeter certified since 2022. Spontaneous fermentation with ambient yeasts, no fining and no filtration are standard practice at the estate, and no sulphites are added — as with the rest of the Keltis range, only what fermentation itself produces naturally remains in the bottle.

SERVING NOTE

Serve chilled, around 8–10°C. Take it out of the fridge 10 minutes before pouring.

This white spent nine months in oak, so a wide glass helps: give it a few minutes to open up.
